«Poland has remained deeply rooted in me (…). I became passionate about this country. »
Jean-Pierre Mottier
Born in Geneva in 1949
Photographer and entrepreneur, Jean-Pierre Mottier also taught photography at the Centre d'enseignement professionnel de Vevey until his retirement in 2014.
Interview with Jean-Pierre Mottier
Attracted to ‘Eastern Europe’ from an early age, Jean-Pierre Mottier first set off to discover the countries behind the Iron Curtain when he was just 19, while still in training. He returned after completing his apprenticeship in 1970, travelling through Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Russia. Although he didn't dare take his camera out so as not to offend the people he met, he kept plenty of images and memories. His travels to Poland deeply impact him, and he will remain attached to this country, where he forged lasting friendships, for the rest of his life.
Jean Pierre Mottier

From the start of the strikes in Gdansk in August 1980, Jean-Pierre Mottier followed Polish events closely, fascinated by the peaceful nature of the Solidarnosc movement. As soon as martial law was decreed, he took part in humanitarian convoys to Poland organised by various circles in Switzerland. On his return from these trips, overwhelmed by the misery of the children's institutions he had visited, he and a handful of friends founded the association Enfants. Its aim is to provide aid to Polish institutions in difficulty. Over the course of its 40 years of existence, the association has expanded its activities to help disadvantaged children in other countries, as well as in Switzerland.
