Your solidarity - Our Liberty
Shock
The 13th of December 1981. A state of siege is declared in the Polish People's Republic. Officially, the decree instituting martial law was a reaction to the difficult economic situation, the threat to the country's energy security and, above all, the probable military intervention in Poland by the Soviet Union. The Communist regime feared the loss of power in the face of the growing role of the Solidarność trade union.

Call to the World
Bern, 19 December 1981: 10,000 people demonstrated to express their solidarity with the Polish people and the Solidarność movement and to defend trade union freedom in Poland. This demonstration against the imposition of martial law in Poland was organised by all five major Swiss trade union centres: the Swiss Trade Union Confederation (USS), the Confederation of Swiss Christian Trade Unions (CSC), the Union fédérative du personnel des administrations et des entreprises publiques, the Federation of Swiss Employee Societies (FSE) and the Swiss Association of Evangelical Employees (ASSE), joined by Swiss politicians and intellectuals, Polish nationals, as well as Solidarność activists and supporters from abroad.

On this chilly evening of 19 December, thousands of people are gathered in Parliament Square in Bern to witness the tragic events unfolding in Poland... Calls for solidarity are resounding...
Ruth Dreifuss, General Secretary of the Union Syndicale Suisse, took the floor to express the support of Swiss trade unionists for the cause of Solidarność and their identification with the social and political ideas embodied by the Polish movement. What did this movement mean to them? Looking back over those years, Ruth Dreyfuss highlights its significance:

Messages of freedom and hope are conveyed through the lyrics of Paul Eluard and the Polish bard Kaczmarski, and the old Polish anthem of the 19th century is sung by the Polish singere Marek Mogilewicz soared to the sound of his guitar on Parliament Square, where the huge crowd listened in silence.
Marsz, Marsz Polonia
Marsz, marsz Polonia…, chanson du XIXe siècle
In a climate of uncertainty and high geopolitical tensions, news flashes about Poland multiplied from 13 December 1981 and over the following months, whether in television news bulletins, programmes broadcast on national channels or press releases and articles published in the daily press. The first images of tanks in the Polish streets that appeared on TV screens or in the press were strangely reminiscent of the Soviet interventions in Budapest in 1956 or Prague in 1968, and awakened collective awareness of the seriousness of the situation. We fear the worst...
